Importing livestock equipment into Bangladesh: the permit sequence
What a commercial importer needs before a bank will open an L/C, and where livestock goods differ from general merchandise.
Current as of 2026-09-01
Register with the Office of the Chief Controller of Imports & Exports for an Import Registration Certificate. The IRC is issued to commercial and industrial importers and is valid for five years, renewable.
Classify the goods under the correct HS code. No bank will process an LCA form or open an L/C without the HS code properly recorded, and misclassification is the most common cause of port delay.
For livestock and veterinary goods, obtain an Import Permit from the Department of Livestock Services under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, supported by the proforma invoice and your DLS registration.
Feed and premix importers additionally hold an annual licence under the Fish Feed and Animal Feed Act 2010, applied for through the DLS e-Trade portal. Veterinary medicines register separately with the Directorate General of Drug Administration.
Open the L/C with your bank against the LCA form, then arrange clearing. Budget realistically for duty, VAT, AIT, port and clearing charges — on veterinary consumables these routinely add 30–60% to the FOB invoice.
